Nokta Simplex ULTRA Questions, Answered
How much is the Nokta Simplex ULTRA?
£299.95, reduced from £349.95. We say this plainly on our Nokta page too: it is the best value detector we sell at any price, because you get the whole machine rather than a stripped down version of one.
Is it really fully waterproof?
Yes, rated IP68 and submersible to 5 metres, 16 feet. That is not splash resistance, it is genuine submersion, and it is standard rather than an upgrade. For beach and river work it removes the main thing that kills detectors.
What are the six search modes?
Field, Park, 4 Tone, 99 Tone, Beach and All Metal. Most owners live in two of them. Beach mode is the one that matters if you work wet sand, and Field is where you will spend most of your time on farmland.
Is it suitable for a complete beginner?
Yes, and it is our usual recommendation for a first serious machine. The preset modes do the thinking at the start, and the depth of adjustment underneath, 30 sensitivity levels, notch discrimination, frequency shift and adjustable recovery speed, is there when you are ready for it.
How heavy is it and how does it pack down?
1.2kg, 2.6lbs, on a full carbon fibre shaft adjustable from 25 to 52 inches. It retracts to about 63cm, 25 inches, which means it fits in a rucksack or behind a car seat rather than needing its own space.
How is it powered, and what is the Bluetooth for?
A built in 2,300mAh lithium battery charged over USB, so a phone charger or power bank works. Bluetooth handles wireless headphones, and the same USB connection lets you update the firmware, which Nokta have a strong record of continuing to issue.
What is the coil, and can I change it?
It ships with a 28cm waterproof DD coil, which is a sensible all round size. DD coils cope with mineralised British soil far better than concentric designs, which is why nearly every serious machine uses one.
What else is built in?
A pinpoint function, vibration detection for noisy or underwater use, an LED flashlight, and backlighting on both the LCD and the keypad. A separate handheld pinpointer at £49.95 is still faster once the hole is open.
