Groundtech Detectors
In short. Groundtech make 3D ground scanners at a price a serious amateur can reach: £1,300 to £2,249, against tens of thousands for the professional German systems. They survey an area and show you what is under it.
Groundtech metal detectors are scanners rather than sweep machines, and that distinction is the whole point. A 3D scanner answers a different question from a detector. It will not find you a coin, but it will show a cavity, a wall footing or a large buried mass under a survey grid. For cache hunting, building archaeology and checking a site before you commit weeks to it, that is the useful answer.
The Range
GR-3, £1,300The GR-3 is the entry point into 3D ground scanning and the cheapest credible route into it.
GR-3 Plus, £1,600The GR-3 Plus adds depth and a better imaging resolution for £300.
GR-4, £1,750The GR-4 is the one most buyers settle on, with the best balance of depth, resolution and ease of use.
GR-4 Dual, £2,249The GR-4 Dual combines 3D scanning with a pulse induction detector, so one unit both surveys and confirms.
What a Scan Actually Shows
Changes, not objectsThe scanner maps variations in the ground. A void, a stone footing and a buried tank all show as anomalies, and reading which is which is the operator’s skill.
Grid discipline mattersResults are only as good as the survey. Consistent line spacing, consistent speed and a flat approach produce readable images. Rushing produces noise.
Depth depends on sizeLarge features read metres down. Small objects do not read at all, however deep the specification claims. This is physics, not a product limitation.
Confirm with a detectorScan to find the area, then detect to find the object. The GR-4 Dual does both, or pair a scanner with a machine from our
ground detectors.
Why Buy From Us
Official UK dealerWarranty handled here rather than shipped abroad, with spares held in the UK.
We use this kitWe survey with these systems ourselves, so the advice comes from the field rather than the brochure.
Honest about limitsLong range equipment is often oversold. We will tell you plainly what a system can and cannot do.
Training and setupSet up, calibration and a walk through of the software included with every professional system.

Groundtech Questions, Answered
What is a 3D ground scanner?
A survey instrument that takes readings on a grid and builds a picture of what lies beneath it. It shows cavities, structures and large buried masses. It is not a metal detector and will not find coins.
Which Groundtech should I buy?
The GR-4 at £1,750 for most buyers. The GR-4 Dual at £2,249 if you want the pulse induction detector built in, which saves carrying two instruments.
How deep does a Groundtech scanner reach?
Several metres for substantial features such as voids, walls and large metal masses, in cooperative ground. Quoted maximums assume ideal conditions and large targets, as they do across this whole category.
Is it hard to learn?
The scanning is straightforward. Interpreting the images takes practice, because the ground produces anomalies that are not what you are hoping for. Setup and a walk through are included when you buy from us.
Can I use it on my own land only?
You need the landowner’s permission to survey and to dig, exactly as with a detector, and scheduled monuments are off limits. See how to get permission.
Does it need a laptop or phone?
The unit handles the scan and display itself. Exporting scans for a closer look is useful but not required to operate it in the field.
