Metal Cover Locators
In short. A metal cover locator is a working tool, not a hobby detector. It finds buried manhole covers, stop taps, valve boxes and inspection chambers that have been tarmacked or turfed over. The C.Scope CS880 is £325.
Utilities, councils, groundworkers and water companies all have the same recurring problem: a chamber exists on the drawing and nobody can find it on site. These metal locators are built for that job, with a deliberately coarse response that ignores small debris and finds the large iron plate you are actually after.
What It Is Built For
Large iron, not small findsTuned for cast iron covers and frames. It deliberately ignores nails, foil and coins, which is exactly what you want when sweeping a car park.
Through tarmac and turfReads covers buried under surfacing or grown over with grass and soil, where visual inspection has already failed.
Fast area sweepingBuilt to cover ground quickly and give an unambiguous indication, rather than to analyse what it finds.
Simple in the fieldSwitch on and sweep. A tool used by whoever is on site that day cannot need a settings discussion first.
The CS880
£325, British builtThe C.Scope CS880 comes from the same Kent manufacturer that makes professional cable and pipe locators.
Why C.ScopeTheir main business is utility location, so this is a professional instrument from a professional range rather than a repurposed hobby detector.

Metal Cover Locator Questions, Answered
What is a metal cover locator?
A professional instrument for finding buried metal covers and frames, such as manhole covers, stop tap boxes and inspection chambers, where they have been surfaced or grown over. It is built to find large iron and ignore everything else.
How deep will it find a cover?
Comfortably through normal surfacing and soil cover. A cast iron cover is a very large target, so depth is rarely the limiting factor. Reinforced concrete and dense rebar are what cause difficulty.
Can I use a normal metal detector instead?
You can, but it will be slower and far noisier, because a hobby machine responds to every nail and ring pull on the way. A purpose built locator gives a clean indication on the thing you want.
Will it work over reinforced concrete?
Reinforcement mesh produces a continuous response that can mask the cover, which is a limitation of the physics rather than the instrument. On tarmac, paving and turf it works as intended.
Who normally buys one?
Water companies, councils, utility contractors, groundworkers and surveyors. Anyone who regularly has to find a chamber that is on the drawing but not visible on site.
Is it the same as a cable and pipe locator?
No. A cable and pipe locator traces a buried service along its length. This finds a discrete metal cover. If you need both jobs doing, ring us and we will point you at the right C.Scope instrument.
