Groundtech GR-4 Ground Scanner is a powerful 3D underground scanning device designed to detect buried metals, cavities, tunnels, and archaeological structures with high precision. Built with advanced ground imaging technology, it provides clear scan data to help treasure hunters, archaeologists, and surveyors locate targets faster and more accurately. Ideal for deep ground exploration, the GR-4 delivers reliable performance across different terrains while reducing unnecessary excavation.

Description

In short. The Groundtech GR-4 is a 3D ground scanner at £1,750. It surveys an area and shows you what is under it, including metals, cavities, tunnels and buried structures. It is the model most Groundtech buyers settle on. It is a survey instrument, not a coin machine.

A 3D ground scanner earns its money by stopping you digging. You walk a grid, the unit builds a picture of the ground beneath it, and you decide where to open the earth with some idea of what is down there. For cache hunting, building archaeology and assessing a permission before you commit a season to it, that is a different kind of useful from a detector that beeps.

What the GR-4 Finds

Buried metal massesContainers, hoards and large metal objects show as clear anomalies rather than as a tone you have to interpret by ear.
Cavities and tunnelsVoids read differently from solid ground, which is what lets a scanner find a chamber or a tunnel that holds no metal at all.
Structures and footingsWall lines, floors and foundations, the targets that matter for archaeology and for working out what a site used to be.
Depth and size, approximatelyThe scan gives you an idea of how deep and how large an anomaly is, which is the information that decides whether it is worth excavating.

How You Actually Use It

Walk a disciplined gridConsistent line spacing, consistent walking speed, coil kept level. The scan is only as good as the survey, and rushing produces noise rather than data.
Read anomalies, not treasureA stone footing, a void and a buried tank all show as anomalies. Working out which is which is the operator’s skill and it takes practice.
Scan, then detectUse the scanner to find the area and a detector to find the object. Pair it with something from our ground detectors range, or step up to the GR-4 Dual at £2,249, which has a pulse induction detector built in.
Expect a learning curveSetup and a walk through are included when you buy from us, because an untrained operator gets confident images that mean nothing.

Where the GR-4 Sits in the Range

  • Groundtech GR-3 £1,300, the entry point into 3D scanning
  • Groundtech GR-3 Plus £1,600, greater depth and finer imaging resolution
  • Groundtech GR-4 £1,750, the balance of depth, resolution and usability most buyers choose
  • Groundtech GR-4 Dual £2,249, the GR-4 plus a pulse induction detector in one unit

Groundtech GR-4 Questions, Answered

How much is the Groundtech GR-4?

£1,750. The GR-3 below it is £1,300 and the GR-4 Dual above it is £2,249. The Dual adds a pulse induction detector, which saves carrying a second instrument into the field.

Is the GR-4 a metal detector?

It is a ground scanner that detects metal among other things. It will not work like a coil machine for coin hunting. If you want one instrument that does both, the GR-4 Dual at £2,249 pairs the scanner with a pulse induction detector.

How deep does the GR-4 scan?

Several metres for substantial features such as voids, walls and large metal masses, in cooperative ground. As with every scanner, quoted maximum depths assume large targets in ideal conditions. Small objects do not read at those depths at all.

Will it find coins?

No, and nothing in this class will. A coin is far too small to register as a ground anomaly. For coins and jewellery a £250 coil machine from our most popular range will find more and weigh less.

What is the difference between the GR-3, GR-3 Plus and GR-4?

Depth and imaging resolution, rising with price. The GR-3 is the cheapest credible route into 3D scanning, the GR-3 Plus adds reach, and the GR-4 is where most buyers land because it is the easiest of the three to get good results from.

Do I need a laptop or phone to use it?

The unit runs the scan and shows the result itself. Exporting scans to look at them properly afterwards is useful but is not required to work in the field.

Is training included?

Yes, setup, calibration and a walk through come with every scanner we sell, and we remain available afterwards. Survey technique matters more here than with any detector.

Do I need permission to survey land?

Yes, exactly as with a detector, and scheduled monuments are off limits entirely. See how to get permission.
