CS880 Questions, Answered
How much is the CS880 Metal Cover Locator?
£325. It is a working instrument from C.Scope’s professional utility locating range rather than a hobby detector, built in Kent for the water industry and groundwork contractors.
What will it actually find, and how deep?
C.Scope publish the detection ranges: a stopcock at 25cm, a valve cover at 50cm, and both a cable pit cover and a manhole cover at 90cm. Those are the real working figures rather than a headline maximum.
Will it work through tarmac and grass?
That is its main job. Locating manhole covers through tarmac and grass is the commonest use, and it also finds stopcock covers, rebar in concrete road surfaces, fuel tanks, valve heads and metal pipes under tarmac or earth.
Why not just use an ordinary metal detector?
A hobby machine responds to every nail and ring pull on the way, so sweeping a car park with one is slow and noisy. The CS880 uses induction balance tuned for large buried metal, so you get a clean indication on the thing you actually want.
What is Target Hold for?
It holds the indication so you can mark the spot without the signal dropping as you move. On a busy site with traffic to manage that is more useful than it sounds.
How long do the batteries last?
Over 100 hours in typical use, from eight AA alkaline cells in a clip in pack. It is also compatible with NiMH rechargeables, and the battery compartment is sealed separately from the electronics.
Is it weatherproof enough for site work?
The construction is waterproof and the search coil is highly robust and rated IP67. It is built to live in a van and be used in British weather rather than kept dry.
What size is it, and does it pack down?
A 20cm search head, overall length adjustable from 107cm to 140cm, and 80cm to 114cm from hand grip to search face. The two part stem with a twist lock makes it easy to stow, and a protective carry bag is available.
Will reinforced concrete cause problems?
Reinforcement mesh produces a continuous response that can mask the cover you are looking for. That is the physics rather than a fault in the instrument. On tarmac, paving and turf it works as intended.
Is it the same as a cable and pipe locator?
No. A cable and pipe locator traces a buried service along its length. This finds a discrete metal cover. If you need both jobs doing, ring us and we will point you at the right C.Scope instrument. See also our metal cover locators page.
