PI Metal Detectors
In short. PI stands for pulse induction. These machines fire a pulse into the ground and listen to the decay, which lets them ignore soil mineralisation and wet salt almost completely. Great depth on larger targets, very little information about what the target is.
A pulse induction machine is the right answer in two situations: wet salt sand, and ground so mineralised that a normal detector will not settle. It is the wrong answer if you want to know whether to dig, because PI machines tell you there is something there and very little else.
How Pulse Induction Differs
Immune to mineralisationIron rich clay and black sand stop mattering. That is the whole reason to own one, and on the worst ground it is transformative.
Depth on bigger objectsSubstantially deeper than a VLF machine on anything larger than a coin, which is why cache hunters favour them.
Almost no discriminationYou will dig iron. A PI machine cannot reliably separate a nail from a silver coin, so bring patience and a good digging tool.
Works in wet saltWhere a VLF detector chatters constantly, a PI machine runs quietly. See our
beach detecting page.
The Range
Deep Hunter Pro3 SE, £1,299The Pro3 SE is the current flagship, with the best depth and the most refined control set.
Deep Hunter Pro3The Pro3 sits just below the SE. Prices move on this one, so ring us for the current figure.
Deep Hunter MobileThe Mobile is the more portable configuration for working away from a vehicle.
Also worth knowingThe C.Scope CS4Pi is a pulse induction machine at a much lower price if beach work is your only reason for wanting one.

PI Detector Questions, Answered
What is a PI metal detector?
One that uses pulse induction. It sends a short magnetic pulse into the ground and measures the decay of the returning signal. Because it is not continuously comparing against the soil, mineralisation stops interfering.
Is a PI detector better than a normal one?
Better in bad ground and on big deep targets. Worse at telling you what you have found. For general coin hunting in ordinary soil a good VLF machine will give you more finds per hour because you waste less time on iron.
Do pulse induction detectors work on the beach?
Yes, and this is where they shine. Wet salt sand is the condition most VLF detectors handle worst, and a PI machine simply ignores it.
How deep will a PI machine go?
Noticeably deeper than VLF on anything substantial, often half again or more. On a single coin the advantage largely disappears, because depth scales with target size regardless of technology.
Can you discriminate at all with PI?
Only crudely. Some machines offer limited iron rejection, but it is not comparable to VLF target identification. Plan on digging most signals.
Who should actually buy one?
Beach detectorists working wet sand, cache hunters after large deep objects, and anyone whose permission is on ground so mineralised that nothing else will settle. For most people it is a second detector, not a first.
