The Middle Option, and Why It Exists

Security wands are usually sold on a sensitivity claim, which tells you almost nothing. ThruScan publish tested detection distances for specific objects instead, and that is the honest way to compare one against another. This unit finds a Browning 14 pistol at 17cm and a razor blade at 5cm.

Those two figures tell you what this wand is for. Firearms and sizeable metal are picked up at a comfortable working distance. Thin blades need you closer, which in practice means a slower, more deliberate sweep around the waistband and ankles rather than a quick pass down the arms.

If your threat model is weapons and phones, this is the right level and the simple on and off operation suits a rotating team. If you are specifically screening for concealed blades, the dX detects a paper blade at 10cm against this unit’s 6cm, and that difference is worth the extra money.

ThruScan Hand Wand Questions, Answered

How much is the ThruScan hand held detector?

£179. It is the middle of our three wands, between the ThruSec at £149 and the ThruScan dX at £249.

What distances will it detect at?

ThruScan publish tested figures: a Browning 14 pistol at 17cm, a C2 Model 75B at 15cm, a paper blade at 6cm, a 6cm copper tube at 5cm, a 9mm pistol bullet at 5cm, a razor blade at 5cm and a 30cm length of 2 by 1.5mm cable at 3cm.

How does it compare with the dX?

The dX adds a five level VU meter and adjustable sensitivity, and it detects a paper blade at 10cm against this unit’s 6cm. If you are screening for blades specifically, that difference is the reason to spend the extra £70.

How is it operated?

A simple on and off switch, rather than the dX’s search button and membrane keys. For a wand handed between a rotating team of door staff, fewer controls is often the right answer.

How is the alarm delivered?

Audio with optional earphone and vibration, plus visual LED indication. Audio and visual low battery warnings trigger before the unit drops below usable operating levels, so it does not fail quietly mid shift.

Will radios interfere with it?

No. Like the rest of the range it carries a specific design feature to prevent false alarms from walkie talkies and radio frequencies.

What are the physical specifications?

4.3 by 8.3 by 41cm, around 420g, 12V DC at 110mA with a standby current of just 3mA. It operates from minus 20 to plus 70 degrees Celsius at up to 95 percent humidity, in an ABS housing.

Is the battery included?

No. It takes a single 9V NiMH 200mAh rechargeable cell, which is optional and not included in the price. First charge is around 15 hours and later charges about 10, so order the battery with the wand rather than after it.
